I’ve always hated this mechanism, where system wide gestures required a second ‘confirm’ performance in certain circumstances. I’ve understood the need for it in certain things like games where the user will likely be swiping all over the place and the last thing they want to do is view Control Center, but it’s always seemed like a very broad fix to a specific problem. Also, I’ve seen this plenty of times outside of games as well, which seems to me like an accident of the platform making assumptions about app behavior.
Giving developers the tools to say “I do want to defer edge gestures, and I want it for these edges” rather than implying that preference for them, is a great step.
